Red Roses

A gift of a dozen red roses is one that you want to keep and display as long as possible. This is because the sight of the roses in a beautiful vase adds grace and charm to any room or office. The red of the rose is a symbol of love and anyone who receives this as a gift wants to relay the message to others. There are simple guidelines you can follow if you want to keep your roses fresh as long as possible. These include:

- Keep them in a cool place. If, for example, you receive a bouquet of roses at the office and you don't have a vase handy, put them in the refrigerator. This will keep them fresh until you can get them home and into water.

- Fill the vase with lukewarm water. Cold water is not good for roses, nor is water that is too hot. Make sure the water is not cooler than the room. This helps the stems to absorb the water quickly and preserves the flowers.

- If there is a package of preservatives with the roses, add this to the water according to the directions on the package.

- If there are any leaves below the water line, you need to cut them off. The water will cause them to deteriorate and this will spread to the flowers themselves.

- Before you put the roses in the vase of water, cut about one inch off the stems in a diagonal direction. Use a knife rather than scissors and cut the stems while they are immersed in water.

- Place the roses in the water as soon as you cut the stems.

- Change the water and recut the stems at least every two days. You should also remove any wilted leaves and add preservatives every few days as well.

- Keep the roses away from direct sunlight. People always tend to place their vase of flowers directly in the light, thinking this will help to keep them longer. Actually the opposite is true.

If you follow these easy steps, you will have your bouquet of roses much longer than usual, showing the person that gave it to you how much you appreciate the gift.
