Growing Roses

There are few things in your garden more beautiful than your roses. Growing roses is not as difficult as one may think. With a little care and planning, you can have roses that will make you proud. To grow healthy roses, all you have to do is make sure you plant them where they will be the happiest.

When planting your roses, make sure they are in a place where they are going to get at least six hours of sunshine a day. Roses love sunshine and will take more than six hours of it if they can get it. Always water your roses from underneath. Never water from above because water on the leaves will cause them to rot and leave them open to disease. Just put enough on them so the soil is damp, but not soggy. When you're watering, give them a good watering at least once a week. However, you have to be careful. Roses are touchy when it comes to a lot of water. They will end up drowning. The best time to water is in the morning or the evening. This way if you over water, it can be dried up a little with the heat of the sun.

When you're preparing the soil in the spring, make sure that you turn the soil over deep enough to give a soft bed for your plants. Add some compost or well-seasoned manure to the soil. This will not only give your plants the nutrients it needs, but will also help to keep the soil draining. It is good to work the soil a bit for about a month before you plant. When your plants start to grow and flower your work is not over. You have to make sure you keep all the fallen leaves and petals off the ground. If you leave them there, it could lead to disease.

To prune your rose bush, always use a clean sharp pruner. Never prune your plants in the fall and don't forget to cut off the suckers. This will encourage strong new growth.
