Growing Flowers

Anyone that does gardening knows how much work goes into making it all it can be. That is why we do it and it's no different if you're growing flowers for fun or for profit. They have to be tended, watered and feed. The soil has to be just right and tilled very well before you even start planting.

There are some flowers that will cut down on our work if we want to have them and still give the same beautiful results. Some flowers reseed themselves without ever having to do any thing to them and will do so year after year. One example of this is the sunflower. This is a showy flower that will grow anywhere and the birds will love you for providing their favorite food. They come in a range of colors like orange, white, bronze and bi colors, so why wouldn't you want them in your garden? They grow four to six feet tall, they love the heat of the sun and can withstand drought for a good period of time.

The Zinnia is another flower that will reseed itself and with Zinnias the more you cut them, the more that will grow. They come in many colors and will keep on flowering all through the growing season. There are also many flowers you can grow from seed yourself, such as the moon flower, the nasturtium, and the poppy, which is a hearty flower that will come back each year. The only drawback with the poppy is it can get out of hand if left to grow, so it would be wise to thin them out in the spring.

Don't forget when you plant any seeds at first, follow the directions on the package and cover your seeds until they start to sprout. This protects them from the elements until they are strong enough to make it on their own. Water your seed bed and keep it evenly moist until the seeds germinate. Then thin them out. If you don't they will just stay over crowded and will not do as well. When you're watering, water your plants near the soils edge not from overhead. Watering from the edge is not as harsh on your plants, as it would be with water pouring down on them.
