April Flowers

With the arrival of spring, most of us can't wait for that first burst of life that was frozen such a short time ago, most especially if we live in a climate that has harsh winters. The most likely April flower that you will see is the Tulip or the Crocus. When the tulip comes into bloom it's like the first flower, we ever saw. It brings the promise of the warm springtime rain and winds that blow gently, besides the promise of long lazy days of summer. There must not be a flower that is welcomed as much as the April Tulip. These hearty plants co-exist with other plants that follow the blooming of the Tulip to give us continuous foliage, into summer and beyond.

The Crocus is another April flower that heralds the coming of wonderful springtime and warm summer days. This flower might be short in stature but big on promise and when we view the first crocus coming out of the grown its beauty is incomparable. They are not only flowers at this point, but a sign that summer is on its way and the cold wind of winter is on its way out.

Of course, there are other April flowers such as the Daffodils that besides their beauty will not allow the pests that go with some plants. Squill that stays close to the ground in bloom until Mother Nature coaxes them up to their full height of 8 inches. The Grape Hyacinth bears tight blooms resembling clusters of grapes, unlike the Hyacinth whose flower opens fully and looks like little starfish. The Allium is a very impressive bloomer, which you will find is pest free, as they are not eaten by rodents or deer pest. It is a relative of plain garlic whose blossoms are globe shaped and very large. They bloom with star shaped florets and some contain up to a 1000 of them.

Regardless of what type of April flower you have growing in your yard, they are always such a welcomed sight in spring, not only with the colors they give but with so much promise made of what kind of days we will enjoy from the first time we see them. They lift our spirits after a long cold winter and set our minds to the patio furniture that is stored away and the long bright evenings ahead.
